Richard Mudariki is a painter known for surreal, political satire. As such he puts a humorous spin on often dark subject-matter. In this new work, commissioned by the collector his applies his humour to what could be read as a thorny issue around hair – taming it – and how it defines an identity – the person peering through the hair is characterised by their overgrown locks. His wife works as a hairdresser – so the subject is close to home.
